Safari

No trip to East Africa would be complete without going on Safari !

We offer a range of safaris, from the most luxurious tented-camping safaris, to more challenging trips based around hiking, horse-riding, camel trekking or even mountain biking. Whether you want to eat mouth-watering food, sleep in a four-poster bed and see the wildlife from the comfort of a specially-converted safari vehicle or simply go back to basics and escape all civilisation, we have something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Because of the range and quality of camps, the concentration of wildlife and the good road and air-network, most of our safaris take place in Kenya - chose from the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo, the Aberdares, Lewa, Laikipia, Mount Kenya, and the Chyulu and Shimba Hills.

Chose from some of the best camps and lodges in the World, including Mara Porini Camp, Richard's Camp, Elephant Pepper Camp, Loisaba and Loisaba Star Beds, Elsa's Kopje, Joy's Camp, and Sabuk Lodge.

We also arrange safaris in Tanzania (Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater) and Uganda (gorilla tracking in Bwindi and fishing at Lake Victoria and Murchison Falls).

We outline below the types of safaris available.  Please email us if you require further guidance.

Flying Safaris

Flying on light aircraft from Nairobi you're in the heart of the African bush within 45 minutes.  You will be met at the landing strip by a local guide in a 4x4 vehicle and your safari starts straight away.  This maximizes your time in the game park therefore increasing the number of animals you'll see.  Flying will also give you  bird's-eye view of the park and adds to the excitement of the safari.  Choose from over 30 camps and lodges serviced by small airstrips.  Depending upon the location, numerous other activities are available, including game walks, cultural visits to Masaii bomas (homesteads), birdwatching and balloon safaris.  Click here for flying safari itineraries.

Preferred Camps/Lodges:- Mara Porini Camp, Richard's Camp, Elephant Pepper Camp, Loisaba and Loisaba Star Beds, Elsa's Kopje, Sabuk Lodge.

Road Safaris

As for flying safaris save that your transfer from Nairobi to the game park is in a minibus or 4x4 vehicle.  This can be a cheaper option than flying (particularly for groups of 4 or more) but can be quite tiring, particularly for short, 2 night safaris.  Journey times vary depending upon the season but average time on the road is 5 hours - this gives you a good flavour of Kenyan culture as you travel through outlying towns and villages.  On these safaris you will have a local driver / guide.  Click here for road safari itineraries.

Camping Safaris (fly-camping)

Camping Safaris are an excellent way to experience the African bush.  Rather than staying in permanent camps or lodges you pitch camp in the middle of the game park, and sleep surrounded by the smells and sounds of the wild.  If you opt for a "budget" camping safari it can be cheaper too!  If you prefer we can also include overnight stays in luxury (permanent) tented camps - so you get the best of both worlds!  Click here for camping safari itineraries.  (Extreme Safari tip - our walking, mountain biking, horseback and camel safaris are camping safaris with a twist - see below for details).

Active Safaris

We offer a range of active safaris which give you the opportunity to see game on foot or from the saddle of a horse, camel or mountain bike.  Most trips include game drives in 4x4 vehicles inside one of the larger game reserves (Masai Mara, Samburu or Amboseli) and accommodation is in a mixture of fly-camps and luxury (permanent) tented camps.

Guided Safaris (professional safari guides)

Extreme Safari works with a handful of professional safari guides to provide the ultimate safari experience.  All safaris are individually tailored for small groups (maximum 4-6 persons) to ensure a personalised service.  All guided safaris are in 4x4 vehicles, generally Land Rovers or Land Cruisers - we do not use tourist minibuses. All our guides are members of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association and have unrivalled knowledge of the African habitat.  Many of our guides have developed specific expertise in certain areas, be it birdwatching, flora, wildlife photography, bush-craft, or Masaii nomadic culture.  Most of our safari guides are 2nd or 3rd generation white-Kenyans who have been brought up in the Wilderness.  All guides are proficient in Swahili and other local dialects and some guides even speak fluent French, Spanish or Italian.  All guided safaris are tailor-made so please get in touch for further information or complete our Plan Trip Form.
