Mountain Bike Safaris in Kenya

Attached are a selection of itineraries.  Most trips require a good level of fitness but itineraries can be varied to meet the particular requirements of your group.  We tend to insist that people within a group have a similar level of fitness / technical ability - that said our support vehicles maintain good radio contact and you can always hitch a ride with them if you're struggling!

Note: for the most part these are fairly challenging adventure safaris, not luxury safaris.  We can combine fly-camping with overnights in luxury (permanent) tented camps to ensure a good balance between comfort and adventure.

All trips require a minimum of 3 pax (although we can run trips for couples by special arrangement).

For groups of 4 or more we can create bespoke trips.

6. 6,000ft (10 to 4) Mount Kenya Downhill MTB Challenge. (1 day)

[ADVANCED TO EXPERT]

Day 1  - Set off early morning with the other 600 riders, Fight your way across the thick plains at 10,000ft altitude before hitting the 6,000ft downhill blast. Follow the loose gravel paths and spread across the open downhill slopes of Mount Kenya. Compete with the international riders for the top places or cruise down and enjoy the beatiful foothills of mount Kenya.  Serious riders use full-suspension bikes but a good hardtail is probably sufficient (and many locals compete on locally-made Black Mambas - old-school Flying Dutchman).  Helmets are compulsory.

At the end of the day compare stories with the other riders, put your feet up and enjoy a cold Tusker in celebration of a great achievement.

Note this is an annual event (in 2005 it will be held on Saturday 26th February;  Entries open November.)

If there is sufficient interest we can include this 6,000 ft descent in Trip 3.  Please email us for details.

Points to Note

* rides are accompanied by vehicles that carry equipment, baggage, spares, refreshment and first aid. This also includes a trailer for transporting bikes. There are times where the riders are going for brief rides, on these occasions the vehicle will probably not accompany them, rather they will carry necessities such as food and water in their day packs.

*staff includes English speaking driver/ guide; bicycle guide and mechanic; cook;

*distances covered daily depends entirley on the ability of the riders but can vary from 35 kms to 100kms. There are vehicle uplifts from time to time as distances between hotels, campsites vary and one doesn't have much choice. It is imperative that we ascertain the standard of riders and what they have on their agenda - hard riding, just enjoyment - i.e. slow riding and absorbing the surrounding country, a few kilometres daily to see and enjoy their surroundings - this will enable us to plan on the type of guide required and transporting and ride details!

* as for riders of varying degrees of fitness, rides can be varied according to different degrees of ability and experience, from technical single-track to wide, sandy roads, river beds and animal tracks.

*should participants tire they can always ride in accompanying vehicles.

*tents are dome, standup with camp beds and matresses. Pit toilets and bucket showers are supplied in our fly camps.

* meals are basic but good, plentiful and menus are varied.

What to bring:

*hat or cap, sunglasses (sports shade not 'fashion glasses!); cycling shorts with padded crotch; gloves; worn in riding / walking shoes.

*cool wear for day, warm for evening; rainwear; swimwear;

*personal toiletry including soap; towel; sunblock 35; antiseptic cream and liquid; plasters; malaria medication as prescribed by your doctor.

*camera; binoculars; film.

*reading materials.

*soft sided duffel bag, no suitcases; day pack (15-25 litres).

*spare tube; puncture repair kit; tools; cables; water bottles / Camelback.

Waiver + Insurance:

Extreme Safari's suppliers of biking trips will require all participants to sign a waiver before departing on trips.

We also require all participants to provide evidence of suitable insurance.  We can advise on this if required.

Flying Doctor / Emergency Evacuation cover will also be included in the price of the trip - again this is compulsory as most of our trips take place in remote locations far from medical facilities.
