Horseback safaris - Selected Itineraries
Our horseback safaris come in 2 distinct categories:-
1) a safari in the traditional mould, travelling through the wilderness on horseback, setting up camp at the end of every day's ride. This type of safari mirrors the safaris of the early European pioneers. The support crew travel in 4x4s and go ahead to set up camp every evening so that by the time we arrive after a long day in the saddle the drinks are chilled, dinner is cooking and the water for our camp showers has been heated. These safaris are a minimum of 5 days.
2) In the second type of safari you will be based at a ranch, lodge or luxury tented camp and will ride out each day to explore the surrounding area. Properties that offer horseriding include Borana Lodge, Longonot Game Ranch, Lewa Safari Camp, Lewa Wilderness Trails and Loisaba. (Some of these properties also appear in our traditional horseback safaris.)
Traditional Horseriding Safaris

Our horseback safaris are the most unique and exciting adventures in East Africa - the closest you can get to the experience of the early Pioneers. These safaris that journey through the game-lands of Kenya on Somali-Arab crossbred horses, provide an exceptional opportunity to experience wildlife and habitats off the beaten track. Our safari company pioneered horseback safaris across Masai-land among the big game and remain the most experienced riding outfitter.
In the saddle our trek will take you through mountains and forest, across vast open savannah, into rivers and water-holes and up huge escarpments all filled with a variety of animals. There are no fences, telegraph poles or tarmac roads and the sense of space and freedom is quite overwhelming. Imagine riding across the open plains surrounded by zebra and wildebeest or watching a herd of elephant feed, or imagine a gallop alongside the neck of a giraffe.
Our rides either start in the Loita or Chyulu Hills, some 150 kms from Nairobi. After having spent a night in a comfortable Nairobi hotel you will be driven out to our first camp set up by a spring or in a glade of acacia trees. Each day, with your saddlebags packed with a picnic, hip flask, camera and sunscreen, we head into the wild blue yonder, riding for about 6 to 7 hours. Meanwhile, our skilled African staff have broken camp, driven round on bush tracks and re-erected the whole camp in time for our arrival. We arrive at our new camp in time for tea, cocktails and a hot shower followed by a sumptuous supper cooked over a camp fire.
