Sabuk Camel Safari

OUTLINE

Three night / four day camel safari in Laikipia Northern Kenya.

We spend 2 nights fly-camping and 1 night in the spectacular Sabuk Lodge.

Your night in the lodge is either at the beginning or at the end of your safari depending upon your inbound and outbound flights (although ideally you should spend a night in the lodge at the start of the safari, and one night at the end to relax before setting off back to Nairobi.

(5 day camel safaris also available).

ITINERARY

We set out from Sabuk Lodge in Northern Kenya, either on foot or on your camel, and follow the course of the Ewaso Nyiro river.

Sat atop a camel you have a great vantage point from which to spot game not visible from ground-level.

For those who prefer to walk, the camels can be used solely as baggage carriers (they also carry the tents, cooking gear and other essentials).

All treks are guided by trained and experienced Maasai guides who have unparalleled knowledge of the local terrain and of course the fauna and flora.

Setting off early morning we usually arrive at the 'fly camp' before lunch.

The camp staff (consisting of the camel handlers, cook, butler, guides) make camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river and set about preparing lunch while you relax with a cold drink.

Lunch is three courses and normally consists of a tasty starter, home-made pizza, quiche or pasta, cold meats, salads, etc. followed by fruit/fruit salad, or cheese.

After lunch you can 'chill' out, sleep or read a book.  Alternatively you can go for a swim in the river or fish.

In the late afternoon/evening, if you wish, you can embark on a guided walk from the camp to explore the surrounding countryside.  Your guides will identify the local birdlife (giving their full names in English, Latin and Masai), explain the medicinal uses for indigenous bushes and roots, and point out spoor of the local wildlife - from kudu to giraffe, leopard, elephant and buffalo.

Every evening we will have sundowners on a rocky promontory or ridge offering a spectacular view of the setting sun.

At night, no luxury is spared as you are treated to a three course meal and a bottle of wine, before moving to the campfire for a nightcap and to exchange stories.

You retire to your tent for a good nights sleep.  Whilst we use mobile camps, the tents are very comfortable, big enough to stand-up in and equipped with a good mattress, sheets, duvet, blankets, a pillow and bed cover

Everyone is issued with a bath towel, face cloth, and a bathrobe.

In the tent, there is also a small table, with bottled water on it, mugs, and a mirror.

Safari showers (with hot water of course) and toilets are provided for your ablutions.

The next morning you wake up to a fresh African dawn and the smell of breakfast being cooked over the fire.

We provide a full cooked breakfast every morning, as well as fruit juice, fruit, cereal, freshly brewed coffee and tea.

After breakfast the whole fly camp is taken down, put on the camels, and we set off to another site, further down or upstream, getting there in time for lunch.

At the end of the safari, we head back to Sabuk Lodge either for one final night in the lodge or to connect with your flight back to Nairobi.
